Over the past two years, IUS has strengthened its international visibility and reputation through its presence in several recognized global university rankings, including the QS Europe University Rankings, QS Southern Europe Rankings, Webometrics World University Ranking, SCImago Institutions Rankings, and the AD Scientific Index.
The University performs particularly well in areas related to internationalization, digital visibility, academic engagement, and research performance among private higher education institutions. Notably, IUS is consistently recognized as one of the leading private universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and maintains a strong position in rankings that assess research impact, scientific productivity, web presence, and innovation.
Particularly noteworthy is IUS’s performance in the Webometrics World University Ranking, one of the most widely recognized university rankings in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent years, IUS has consistently maintained its position as the leading private university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while strengthening its standing among all higher education institutions in the country. According to the latest Webometrics results, IUS improved its global position and remained among the top-ranked universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, reflecting continued progress in digital visibility, research dissemination, academic impact, and international outreach.
In addition, IUS has actively participated in international sustainability initiatives and rankings focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, while also receiving international recognition through the SDG Accord for its contributions to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and the integration of sustainability principles into teaching, research, community engagement, and institutional development.
Furthermore, IUS was a pioneer in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, becoming the first and only university from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Balkan region to be included in the ranking in 2018. The University maintained its presence in the ranking for four consecutive years (2018–2022), demonstrating its long-standing commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals through education, research, institutional policies, and societal engagement.

Since the adoption of UN Agenda 2030 through 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), in accordance with its strategic plans, has sistematically supported them in all segments of its activities.
The Times Higher Education (THE), a prestigious worldwide university ranking organization from London, has ranked IUS 101-200 in its Impact Rankings in 2019, based on the criteria for the success of the achievement of UN goals. The submission of the ranking application to THE was preceded by extensive and comprehensive internal self-evaluation and control of the implementation of the SDGs at IUS by the IUS Quality Assurance Office.
In the list of THE Impact Ranking 2020, among the numerous world universities that implement SDG goals through their university activities, IUS ranked in the 9th band. It is the only university in BH and the region which met the set criteria to appear on this prestigious ranking list in two consecutive years.
In recent years, numerous promotions and internal communications have been implemented, resulting in many IUS professors, as well as students, becoming aware of the importance of these very ambitious, 17 sustainable development goals. In this way, IUS not only recognized the UN SDG goals as "its own", but successfully incorporated them into its teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities.
What are the UN SDGs? To counteract the major "global risks" humanity faces, 193 United Nations Member States agreed on a very ambitious 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Some of these goals are poverty reduction, combating inequality and injustice and addressing climate change by 2030. To increase possibility of success and implementation of these 17 SDGs, the recommendation for all higher education institutions around the world is to teach and empower today's students - tomorrow's decision makers - to think critically and ethically, to learn to deal with ethical dilemmas and to apply systemic solutions to serious and complex social problems. In addition to student education, the goals are also related to teacher education, the implementation of study programs, and successful teaching and running the institution as well.
